Fast Facts:
5k runs began in ancient times originally known as the Greek Dolichos race. They were officially added to the modern Olympics in 1912 but became popular during the running boom of the 1970’s and 1980’s. During this time running for charity was usually local but appealed to many through the idea of combining exercise and fundraising. The “Race for the Cure” series began in 1983 in Dallas, Texas as a movement for breast cancer awareness. Starting with only 800 participants, the race quickly became global and uplifted the idea of sports supporting charitable and social activism. Did you know that the fastest 5k run world record was set by Joshua Cheptegei in 2020 with a time of 12 minutes and 35.36 seconds. Today, 5k runs are a cultural staple that allow a variety of people to come together as one team fighting for the same cause. Whether you’re a competitive runner or just looking to spend time with your family and friends, 5k runs are a healthy way to unite as a community.
